Standardization in spirometry<\/h2>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Spirometry is the most common pulmonary function test. It is widely used in the assessment of lung function to provide objective information used in the diagnosis of lung diseases and monitoring lung health. In 2005, the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and the European Respiratory Society (ERS) jointly adopted technical standards for conducting spirometry – the so-called ATS\/ERS-2005*. They regulate both the performing of spirometry and the interpretation of its results. Following the ATS\/ERS-2005 ensures the quality, reliability and clinical acceptability of spirometry testing.<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Improvements in instrumentation and computational capabilities, together with new research studies and enhanced quality assurance approaches, have led to the need to update the 2005 technical standards for spirometry to take full advantage of current technical capabilities. A joint task force with experience in performing and analyzing pulmonary function tests, appointed by ATS and ERS, has significantly updated the international standards for spirometry to ensure good laboratory practice.<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The results of its activities are presented in 2019 as an update to the ATS\/ERS-2005 standardization – “Standardization of Spirometry 2019 Update” ** – the so-called ATS\/ERS-2019. The ATS\/ERS-2019 are needed for manufacturers, clinicians and researchers to improve the accuracy and diagnostic value of spirometry measurements, align recommendations to real spirometry testing and reduce negative impact of spirometric maneuvers on the patient as much as possible.<\/div>\n
